Rooted in Columbus, Franklinton boasts a rich history in art and culture, making it an important hub for its recent artistic and entrepreneurial revival. One of the first flagship projects to transform Franklinton was Gravity, a mixed-use residential and commercial development designed to attract young professionals and businesses to the area. This visually striking site features high-design spaces, various amenities, and a contemporary 240,000 square foot, 255-unit multifamily apartment complex.
Kaufman Development approached archall with an initial community design plan that had been developed by NBBJ for this multi-family complex, featuring unique geometric shapes and angles, a live green wall, creative light runs, local community art, and many other intricate design elements. As the Architect of Record, archall was responsible for producing clear construction documents for the builders and trades, and overseeing the construction administration process from beginning to end.
As a collaborative partner and problem-solver, archall worked closely with the city, client, contractors, and engineers to bring Gravity to life. For the live green wall, archall designed a unique irrigation system that keeps all exterior plants hydrated while preventing water from entering the building’s interior. Leveraging their extensive expertise in wood construction, archall transformed the original design concepts into reality, incorporating all the desired bold aesthetics but with a practical and buildable approach.
